CASTAÑO DEL ROBLEDO

BioTrail "Century-old Chestnut Trees"

Walk through the heart of a forest that has sustained generations

Rodeo to Cerro del Castaño Route

We will explore ancient chestnut groves that have been managed for generations, where the chestnut grove is much more than just an ecosystem: it is a living landscape. Through a series of interpretative stops, we will gain an understanding of the evolution of these trees, their traditional uses and their ecological importance, discovering how they have sustained rural life and the area’s biodiversity over time. We will also explore the traces of traditional forest management, gaining an understanding of how these practices have helped to conserve and shape the landscape we see today.

Along this trail, we will venture into a landscape dominated by majestic, centuries-old chestnut trees, living witnesses to the passage of time, as we discover how the interplay between climate, soil and human activity has shaped these unique forests, which today form an essential part of the identity of the Sierra de Aracena. We will gain an understanding of how every element of the environment — from the orientation of the land to the availability of water — influences the development of the chestnut grove and the diversity of life it harbours.

BIOLOGY:

We'll walk through a forest ecosystem shaped by centuries of interaction between humans and the natural environment, where the chestnut groves are one of the most characteristic habitats of the Sierra de Aracena.

We will see the main plant species along the trail for ourselves, learning to recognise the flora of the chestnut grove and the Mediterranean woodland, as well as their adaptations and ecological relationships.

We will put the role of the chestnut tree within the ecosystem into context, understanding its importance as key species in local biodiversity, a source of food, a refuge for wildlife and a fundamental part of mountain culture.

We will explore how ecological dynamics — plant succession, seasonal cycles and the interaction between soil, water and vegetation — have shaped the landscape as we know it today, enabling us to broaden our perspective and understand our place within living systems.
