Geological walks and geotourism are a branch of ecotourism; they allow you to understand the significance of rocks, their history and the origin of the landscape’s features (geomorphology) whilst enjoying nature.
Geotourism is defined as:
A recreational activity with cultural and educational aims, in which the main focus or attractions are the geology and geomorphology of the landscapes; these places are the focus of visits and tours, such as cave excursions, hill walking, mountaineering, observing beach dynamics and all related activities that promote geoscientific education, whilst at the same time boosting the local economy of these sites.Geremia et al. We offer geological excursions in the area surrounding the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park (Huelva). During these excursions, we will travel by car (or on foot) to unique locations and, where appropriate, follow a trail of low to medium difficulty. We offer the following types:
- GeoTrail: A geological interpretation trail where we combine walking with explanations about the rocks and landscape features, sparking interest and providing key insights into the region’s geological history
- Geo-biodiversity: An environmental education trail where we explain the relationship between plants and local and regional geology
- Geo-Divulga: An introductory course in geology for adults and children, in which we explain the history of the Earth, geological processes, plate tectonics, the rock cycle and types of rock, and regional geology.
- Geo-Divulga: An introductory course in geology for adults and children, in which we explain the history of the Earth, geological processes, plate tectonics, the rock cycle and types of rock, and regional geology
These activities are offered by Helena Chacón, PhD in Geology by the University of Huelva. Find out more about her in the 'About Us' section
