The Landscape and Geology<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">La Pe\u00f1a is an elevated plateau that offers a natural viewpoint with spectacular views of the mountains. The caves were formed by the erosion of the limestone by water and wind over thousands of years.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"6\">2. The Benito Arias Montano Refuge<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">The name of the place pays tribute to the great humanist, theologian and adviser to Philip II, <b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"85\">Benito Arias Montano<\/b>. In the 16th century, this scholar chose these caves as a place of retreat, study and meditation. It is said that he was seeking peace and quiet in which to work on the edition of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"8\">3. Spirituality and Heritage<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">The site is not just about geology; it is a centre of pilgrimage and mysticism:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"10\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Chapel of the Queen of Angels:<\/b> A small 16th-century church situated just above the caves, where one of the province\u2019s most famous pilgrimages takes place.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Arco de los Novios:<\/b> A Renaissance-style stone arch marking the entrance to the grounds.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Sword of Arias Montano:<\/b> A curious rock formation which, according to popular legend, looks like a sword stuck in a stone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"11\">4. Legends and Traditions<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">Like any ancient place, it is steeped in legend. The best-known is that of the <b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"79\">La Mora Cave<\/b>, which tells the story of an Arab princess who took refuge there following the Christian
